Question by CogitoErgoCogitoSum: How is auto insurance (a contracted business service within a capitalist economy) legally enforceable?
How can a government, who supposedly stays as far out of a capitalist economy as possible, enforce that you purchase auto insurance? Isnt that a consumers right to buy or not buy?

One could argue that the privilege to drive at all is granted by the government, and you should abide by their requirements. But by that logic, wouldnt having insurance first be a prerequisite before you could get licensed?

No, your logic is flawed. In this country we insure cars, not drivers. It is not driving that is illegal but driving a car which is not insured. I agree with a point you suggest however, in that I think we should insure drivers, not cars. Thus the government could colect a fee fro every driver and enforce a minimum insurance police on every driver then leave it to drivers to obtain more insurance if they want.

Question by spam: Has anyone tried the Ameriprise Auto insurance? How do you rate their service compared to other insurance co?
They have a tie-up with Costco and offers a very good rate compared to AAA, Farmers, etc. I signed up with esurance who has a excellent rate but after 6 months, they are raising the premium by more than 30%. A feedback or review on Ameriprise will aid me in decision making. Thanks!

I recently got my TLC (Taxi and Limo Commision License). I want to work driving car service/cab in Brooklyn NY, however I don’t know what auto insurance companies offer insurance for driving car service/taxi/etc? I tried allstate and nationwide, they don’t offer insurance. Does anyone know? Help! Thanks.

Most don’t. Companies that do, vary by state. It’s very expensive, and very high risk.

You’re going to have to go to a local, independent agent. Likely, you’ll end up in your state risk fund, whatever it’s called. Expect to pay $ 8,000 a year, for just liability – minimum limits. Up front, no payments.
