car insurance in montreal quebec and Restoring an accidented vehicle?
car insurance in montreal quebec:
Question by The Smart Guy: Restoring an accidented vehicle?
I had an accident with my Jeep tj, it rolled over, the underside is perfect, and the only real damage was to the windshield, and doors, the rest is still fine, i took off the windshield frame/ windshield and doors, and am wanting to purchase replacements.
We declared the vehicle as a total loss, so now it is illegal to drive on the roads for now. The insurance payed the value, minus the scrap value of the vehicle witch was 20% when i purchased the ‘Wrecked” vehicle
Once restored it must undergo an inspection before it can be re plated. What are some key things to look for / fix before i get the inspection done? Do they care about minor body work issues ? What things do they look for that would make them deny the car to be road worthy?
My location is in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
But i assume that car inspections would be similar if not the same criteria for passing or failing all across north America, except perhaps for a few municipal laws,

minor body work issues are fine…….but to get most accurate list of what all needs to b done contact the guy at the DMV that inspects salvaged cars….or call DMV and ask and they will tell u which garage they use…….get list of what all he checks and follow checklist…
um as for what has to b done…fix windshield mounts and replace it……doors may not have to b replaced since it’s usually legal to not have doors on a jeep……..so get it inspected without the doors then if u want them add them later……that way u don’t get any grief about them….or the hinges and such…

Question by Cal: When buying a car in Montreal Canada, do I need insurance at time of registration?
I am buying my first car in Montreal this Friday from a private party. When I go to register the car, will I need to have proof of insurance? So do I buy the insurance in advance and then take the proof to the registration?

Answer by Chris I
I have always got the insurance in advance just in case something happens on the way to the license bureau. I think by law the car should be insured to be on the road.

The other alternative is to buy a car in the U.S and import it into Canada. If I have to do that does anyone know of any company that takes care of all the paperwork and handles everything on your behalf?

Found car insurance quotes montreal in How do I insure my van for a 4-month-long road trip in the USA?
car insurance quotes montreal:
Question by mousemask: How do I insure my van for a 4-month-long road trip in the USA?
Hi,
I just bought a van today, for a 4-month-long road trip that I’m taking with friends. We live (and are licensed) in Quebec, and the van is registered in my name. We’re hoping to leave next week.
We’ll be driving from Montreal to Los Angeles for the first month, and staying in Los Angeles for about 2.5 months before heading back.
I have requested a number of quotes, but leaving the province for more than 3 weeks seems to set off some red flags for our insurers, because the prices are either outrageously expensive (1100$ /year), or the insurers tell us straight-up that they won’t do it.
I’ve been covered as a secondary or occasional driver on my mom’s car in the past, and have never had an accident, never been pulled-over and never had my license revoked. Neither has the other driver.
We are looking into one-way (i.e. civil liability only) insurance for two drivers. I’ve been told that I need a minimum of 2 000 000$ coverage when traveling to the US.
So, any ideas on how/who can make this work?

A Look at car insurance montreal quebec in Would you move back to Montreal from Calgary?
car insurance montreal quebec:
Question by sharon c: Would you move back to Montreal from Calgary?
I find this city really trashy, it’s really along ways to drive anywhere. Cost of living is double, insurance for my car is about 10 times that of Quebec, the people are rude and there are a lot of problems and it seems quite dangerous. Kinda “skiddy”, would you move out of here? I don’t know if I made the wrong decision to come.
I hate Calgary, but I have been here for two months, have I given it enough thought? There are good wages here but all the money you make goes to crap.

Answer by Rose
Calgary is not so bad. I must say I disagree with most of what you’ve described. I feel perfectly safe in this city and I don’t think it’s “skiddy”. There are a few crap neighbourhoods but that is true of anywhere. Where I live it’s really beautiful and people are (usually) nice. You’ve only been here for two months so don’t completely write it off. It’s tough to move and adjust to a new place but if you keep an open mind I’m sure you’ll find something to like about it. Plus the summer is not humid like it is in Montreal. Of course, I’m bias because I grew up here.
I hope things get better for you soon. Remember someone out there in Calgary wishes you well. Good Luck

A Look at auto insurance companies montreal in Can someone help me understand the car rental laws in Ontario and the rest of Canada?

Question by canadianrobert: Can someone help me understand the car rental laws in Ontario and the rest of Canada?
I have the optional coverage added to my Bank of Montreal MasterCard for car rentals. Full details can be found here.

It says I must decline the Collision Damage Waiver or Loss Damage Waiver from the Car Rental company. When I ask the car rental agencies for a breakdown of their insurance I never get a straight answer.
In summary the benefits are:
Coverage Benefits
Subject to the terms and conditions, You are covered for:
1. damage to the Rental Car; and
2. theft of the Rental Car or any of its respective parts or accessories; and
3. rental agency charges for valid loss-of-use while the Rental Car is being repaired; and
4. reasonable and customary charges for towing the Rental Car to the nearest available facility.
This coverage does not provide any form of third party automobile, property damage or personal injury liability insurance.
What exactly does the last line mean? “coverage does not provide any form of third party automobile, property damage or personal
injury liability insurance.”
One person at a car rental company said that the rental company covers everyone for third party damage and liability under their own insurance and the extra insurace is not neccessary as BOM would cover the rental car. When I researched it online, it seems many people think their own car insurance covers them. Is this true? I do not own a car and do not have regular auto coverage. I plan on a renting a lot of cars in the next 6 months and the savings could be significant if I go without the rental agency coverage. But I’m uncertain if I would be responsible for third party damage/liability if I decline the coverage.
Can someone help clarify this for me?

I checked with Avis Car Rental (as an example) and the following information was listed on their website:
“Avis provides liability coverage for its vehicles as required by applicable law. In most instances, this will include basic public liability coverage for the renter or authorized driver up to the minimum financial responsibility limits of the applicable jurisdiction at no additional charge. In some locations the liability coverage which is provided is secondary to any other applicable coverage.
This means the renters personal liability insurances used first and the Avis protection will not apply until the renter or drivers insurance, if any, has been exhausted.”
Liability coverage basically covers other people, other property and other vehicles… not the rental car.
Basically this means that third party liability and property damage insurance would be include in the rate that you pay for the rental.
I checked with Ontario law to get some specifics for you to make sure that this information is applicable to all car rental companies in the province.
“The Ontario government …states…. that the personal auto insurance policy of a renter covers them for liability arising from the use of rental vehicles.
Vehicle rental firms provide insurance coverage on vehicles for renters who do not have personal auto insurance in Ontario.”
The average level of liability coverage on an Ontario personal auto policy is $ 1million. This is the level of public liability coverage that you get from the rental company as you do not have your own coverage.
So basically, your credit will cover loss or damage or theft to the rental car and basic public liability and property damage, as required by the province of Ontario, is inlcluded in your rental rate.
To give you an example if you were in the rental car and ran over the curb and knocked over someone’s mailbox, ran over their foot, backed into their car and dinged up the fender of the rental car…. the liability coverage included in your rate would cover the damaged mailbox, the injured food and the damage to the poor soul’s car! Your credit card would cover the damage to the fender of the rental car.
You need not purchase any coverages.

Question by Maftun: Dejardin insurance construction truc hit my car when I don’t have insurance?
Today Morning a construction truc hit the front bumper of my car. I have no insurance living in Montreal. I called police and victim wrote the joint report in front of police. How can I get the repair money. Should I call his insurance company for payment?

Since you have no insurance yourself you have to contact his insurance and attempt to get paid. You will probably have to sue them, and you will need a lawyer.
Good luck with that.

car insurance in montreal quebec and For insurance cost repairs and parts, which is better , the Honda Fit , Subaru Legacy Wagon or Toyota Matrix ?
car insurance in montreal quebec:
Question by Gaura: For insurance cost repairs and parts, which is better , the Honda Fit , Subaru Legacy Wagon or Toyota Matrix ?
Im looking for a fuel efficient vehicle to drive one hour into Montreal. I live in the rural area of Quebec known as Rawdon, which is a little mountainous, and the weather can change from slush to ice to rain for periods of time in the winter. Im a musician and cook that needs an economical hatchback to carry my equipment around. A used car salesman told me that the Honda Fit will be less safe to drive in the winter on Quebec roads than the Subaru Legacy wagon will be. Will it make that much difference ? Is there more chance of getting killed in the Honda Fit on dangerous roads ? Im not a fast driver anymore, and don’t need any more speeding tickets. Some people might say that the Subaru is a superior car ( 2006 Legacy ) but I just spoke to a friend of mine who used to own a Subaru and she said she was paying a lot of money for parts when she needed to do repairs, and to stay away from them. Are Subaru parts much more expensive than Honda, and please tell me why the Subaru wagon is a better choice, if it is. The engine on the Subaru Legacy is almost double the size, I think 2.5 L as opposed to the Fit 1.5, although both are 4 cylinder., and both are selling for around $ 10,000.
I havent looked enough into the Toyota Matrix. They seem to fall somewhere between the Honda Fit and he Subaru Legacy. I think the Fit would probably give the best gas mileage, the Matrix the next best and the Subaru the least. But again, which cost the most to repair ?
I live in the country and my life has not been functional without a vehicle the last few weeks since my Dodge Caravan died, so I need to make a decision as soon as possible.

if the subaru is all wheel drive get it for where you live both the Fit and Matrix are front wheel drive. the Fit will be cheaper insurance and repair wise its a honda just change the oil it will last you 250k miles easy and it has been a top buy in car and driver mag every year it has been out. subarus aren’t as reliable and the wrxs are known as death traps. put snow tires on the Fit you should be ok
