Geico is good and others too. For a true comparison use the binder from your current insurnace so that the quotes you get are for the same levels on insurance that you have. Make sure you understand the coverage too.

Okay, so I’m 24. Lived in Montreal since I was 16. No one I know here drives – it just isn’t really the thing to do. I never took driving lessons and don’t know anything about cars. In a few months I’ll be moving to a small town, and I’ll have to learn how to drive and buy a car.

I’ve done a bit of searching questions similar to mine about good first cars. It seems the general consensus is whatever’s low-maintenance and cheap on insurance, so I’ll do a bit more research on those things when the time comes. But right now I’m wondering about vehicle types.

I have a few pets, and we move around a lot, so a bigger vehicle seems more practical for our living conditions. Like a van, jeep, truck, etc. But they seem pretty hard on gas costs. There’s a lot of little cars I read about that are pretty good with mileage and general costs, but the size might be a problem.

So that’s my question. What’s the best type of vehicle for a beginner? Cost and handling-wise. Van, SUV, punch buggy, etc? Is it possible to get a bigger vehicle like a truck that’s cheap on gas? Sorry if I’m wordy, the car world is intimidating!

I am so sick and tired of looking for an auto insurance quote that helps me survive. I am currently paying around $ 250 a month for auto insurance which is ridiculous with a $ 400 car payment. I had some past accidents which is killing me on my insurance costs but I haven’t had any recent accidents. I have tried all the major companies….state farm, geico, nationwide,the general,safe auto,erie….you name it I have tried it and I have tried even some of the not so heard of….amica,encompass,kemper……for the love of GOD! I work for an insurance agency with over 30 companies, so I know how aggravating it can be shopping for insurance. It’s almost impossible to tell what the cheapest would be just by giving an estimate. Each company is different, and thus, each rates different drivers differently. Every person is different. Depends on what you drive, what county you’re in, your credit score, driving history, claims record, etc etc etc. So my auto insurance costs 42 a month but say you have bad credit yours might be 82 a month. Call a local independent agent and they’ll get you a good quote.

My semi-annual auto insurance renewal is coming up. I’ve shopped before and I think I’m already getting a damn good rate, but still I’d like to try to get an even better rate.

I’ve tried both Geico and Progressive, and both quoted me over $ 200 higher per year than I already pay. Any other good suggestions? This would be for coverage in California.
Tried Mercury Insurance. They did not offer sufficient liability coverage for me to consider. The max they offered was 100/300/100. I currently have 250/500/100.

The broker probably had a proprietary website that he pays for to do comparisons.

There is no ONE insurance company that is right for everyone – everyone is rated individually – and all companies have different “likes and dis-likes”, different credit tiers, different business models, and many other factors that can vary your rate – and a QUOTE is ONLY a quote until the policy is issued.

Typically, insurance rates will vary from State to State and can even vary by ZIPCODE! It also will depend on the type of car/truck, coverages, limits of liability, and driving record. Some companies run credit scores and MOST run a motor vehicle report and CLUE (Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange) report to see about undisclosed accident involvement.

The best thing to do is call a LOCAL independent agent or broker. Don’t go across town, or to some other city – look for someone CLOSE. Just look in the phone book for the PIA or Big I (Trusted Choice) logos and you will find a professional licensed agent that will be able to help you solve your insurance problems, and give you rate comparisons of several different companies.

An independent insurance agent will normally have a dozen different companies and if he cannot help you, he should be networked with other local agents that can.

In my agency, we have companies that do NOT run a credit score and welcome drivers with “less than perfect” driving records and specialize in youthful operators!

Most of the replies on this site say “go to this on-line carrier or that on-line carrier or that 1-800 number” but I’m sure that when you do, you will find some impersonal computer user with a script to work from and you won’t be able to talk with the same person every time you have a problem!
